What I Wish I Knew Then: 15 Lessons I’ve Learned Over the Years

I did a big thing this year and published my very first book. I acted on a seed planted in 2017 and I didn’t stop until the work was finished. I did it.

And now, being on the other side of the hard work, love, and dedication I poured into such a project, I’ve been reflecting on the last few years and everything I’ve learned. Some lessons are silly, while others have set the foundation of my life, giving me the confidence to go after and achieve my dream of writing and publishing a book.

It’s true that we are always learning, however, similar to when God speaks to us, we must be aware and willing if we are to absorb the knowledge given from our experiences, relationships, and conversations with ourself and others.

I hope you, dear friend, find comfort in “the 15 lessons I’ve learned over the years.” Perhaps it will inspire you to write your own.

I can wear a face full of makeup, or I can wear no makeup at all, and my worth stays the same.

A small detail I’m obsessing over is most likely only a “me” issue. Other people are not as concerned with the matter as I am.

Our bodies don’t change overnight. Eating the cookie, ice cream, pizza, etc. will not kill me! The stress I used to encounter from food fears is way more hazardous to my health.

Not everyone laughing in a public space is laughing at me. As my mom would say, “You’re not that cool.”

Eye contact is important to people. Scanning the room and looking up and down lessens connection and can hurt relationships.

It’s okay to not know what you want to do in the future, however, setting small (or big) goals will help give you direction.

Dogs are cute and therapeutic, and I need one ASAP.

Cars are the worst investment you can make, yet the most unavoidable investment you can make.

When you feel anxious, a few deep breaths can decrease your heart rate and blood pressure, and improve your digestion.

Most of the things you think you can control can’t be controlled at all. Really, control is an illusion and the only one in control is God.

A morning routine is helpful for having a good start to the day, but you can still have a positive start to the day if you skip your morning routine too.

The best thing you can do when you’re tired is go to bed. Nothing else will be productive.

Your mental health is the greatest asset you have. Take care of it, cater to it, invest in it. It’s the best investment you will make.

You won’t accomplish anything if you don’t believe in yourself. I am a badass. I am strong. I am lovable — oh, and affirmations are powerful!

Having friends is easy, but being a friend takes commitment and courage. You choose your community and that community will slowly but surely shape you for better…or for worse.
